Yes, you read that right. I am moving to New York City in two weeks!!!
I am so excited to share this news with you all!
This is something that has been in the works for several months and it’s finally happening. I can’t even express the emotions I’m feeling about this huge life change… I’m excited, nervous, terrified, and so much more.
If you don’t know, I’m currently living in the Chicago area where I work as an assistant buyer for collegiate accessories. I’m close to my entire family as well as some college friends and honestly, life has been great. I’m comfortable, I’m surrounded by people that care about me, and I like my job/coworkers. So…. why am I leaving?
To put it simply, I’m moving to NYC to chase my dream.
Let’s rewind back to 2014 for a minute. When I was in high school, I was signed with a modeling agency in the Chicago area. And for one week in January, I skipped school and flew out to NYC to attend open-calls for NY Fashion Week. It was the first time I had ever been to New York and it was honestly overwhelming. I grew up in a small farm town and Manhattan is exactly the opposite. It was a culture shock, but there was something about the city that intrigued me. I knew that I didn’t want to pursue a modeling career but I knew that the fashion industry was where I was supposed to be.
Fast forward to my sophomore year of college. PAUSE. While on my laptop one night I saw a job posting for a summer intern at a start-up jewelry company in New York. I filled out the application and submitted it without thinking anything of it. I honestly forgot about it. A few weeks later, I received a voicemail saying the company wanted to interview me for the position. I thought I didn’t stand a chance, but I tried anyways. And with a blink of an eye, I was officially a summer intern in New York City at the age of 19. That summer changed my life. I made a promise to myself that I would return to NY as soon as possible to pursue my career.
Fast forward to the present. After WEEKS of deep thinking and self-reflection, I believe that my time to return to New York is now. I’m young, I’m only responsible for myself, and I have a dream. I wish I could say it was an easy decision full of rainbows and butterflies, but it was actually a very hard decision to make. I mean… I will be moving across the country by myself for what could be the rest of my life!
It’s the biggest decision I’ve ever had to make and I really struggled with it. I’m a very practical person and thought the idea of moving was insane. But I am so grateful for my family, my boyfriend, my friends, and the fellow bloggers I talked to about this decision. Everyone I talked to was so supportive and gave me great advice. I couldn’t be more grateful for all of you!
So with that being said, I will be moving to New York in about two weeks- here goes nothing!! I’ll be working as an assistant buyer for men’s clothing at a company in Manhattan. I am so excited about this opportunity. I will be living in Brooklyn through December while I apartment-hunt for something starting in January! There is so much left to figure out, but hey- life can be unpredictable and sometimes you need to take a leap of faith.
If you live in NY or have any moving tips, please reach out to me!! I will gladly use ALL the help that I can get.
Thank you so much!
